THE BOARDROOM AT THIRTY THOUSAND FEET: HOW AN UNASSUMING CEO IN PLAIN CLOTHES UNRAVELED AN EXECUTIVE CONSPIRACY, RESTORED INTEGRITY TO SKYLINE AIRLINES

Chapter 3

“Marcus, get your uncle on the speakerphone right now,” Elise instructed smoothly. “I want to hear him explain why Skyline Airlines overrides its verified reservations to grant improper favors to his personal associates.”

Marcus did not dare hesitate for a single second. With sweat beading across his forehead, he dialed the direct executive line, tapping the speaker icon before holding the phone between them.

The phone rang twice before a booming, self-assured voice filled the silent forward cabin. “Marcus, is it done? Has the plane pushed back? Did Cynthia get settled comfortably in the front window?”

“Uncle Richard, you are on speakerphone inside the forward cabin of Flight 247,” Marcus said hastily, his tone frantic. “And you are speaking directly to Ms. Elise Morgan of Meridian Capital.”

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the telephone line. The distant sound of shuffling office papers ceased instantly, replaced by the ragged sound of an executive realizing his career was suddenly hanging by a thread.

“Ms. Morgan,” Richard Vance stammered, all previous arrogance evaporating into thin air. “I had no idea you were flying commercial with us this evening. This must be an extraordinary, unfortunate clerical error.”

“Clerical errors do not require an executive override code, Mr. Vance,” Elise said coolly. “Nor do they involve instructing cabin crews to threaten legitimate passengers with unlawful arrest by airport security personnel.”

“It was a minor courtesy for an important family acquaintance,” Richard offered desperately, his voice cracking. “Cynthia had a stressful week, and I thought the window seat was occupied by an upgrade applicant.”

“I paid full fare three weeks ago,” Elise countered, her tone cutting through his flimsy excuses. “And more importantly, Meridian Capital is finalizing an eighty-million-dollar fleet modernization loan for Skyline Airlines tomorrow morning.”

Richard choked audibly on his own breath over the speaker. Every crew member within earshot looked as though the cabin floor had just dropped out beneath their feet at thirty thousand feet.

“I was flying to our Chicago headquarters to sign that agreement,” Elise continued calmly. “Now, I find myself wondering whether your airline possesses the ethical foundation required for such an enormous financial partnership.”

“Please, Ms. Morgan, let us handle this privately,” Richard pleaded, abandoning every shred of his corporate dignity. “I will fly out immediately on a chartered jet to apologize to you in person.”

“You will stay right where you are,” Elise commanded softly. “First, Cynthia will vacate the seat she did not purchase and move to the aisle seat indicated on her boarding pass.”

Cynthia scrambled out of seat 2A with astonishing speed, gathering her luxury bags and sliding clumsily into seat 2C, her face burning red with unadulterated shame as passengers watched in quiet amusement.

Elise did not rush to sit down. Instead, she smoothed her simple black sweater, looked at Marcus, and asked for the gate manifest and crew logbook to be brought forward immediately.

“Sarah,” Elise said, turning her gaze toward the trembling lead flight attendant. “A uniform does not confer the right to bully passengers based on arbitrary, superficial standards of personal appearance.”

“I know, ma’am. I am deeply, truly ashamed of my conduct,” Sarah replied, her voice breaking into an open sob. “I let prejudice cloud my professional judgment, and I violated company policy.”

“You violated basic human decency,” Elise corrected gently, yet firmly. “Every passenger on this aircraft deserves respect, regardless of whether they are sitting in row two or row thirty-two in the back.”

The gate agent, who had remained standing quietly by the forward door, tapped Marcus on the shoulder. “Sir, the tower is requesting an immediate departure update. We are losing our runway slot.”

“Tell ground control that Flight 247 will depart when its business is properly resolved,” Elise stated calmly, looking directly at Marcus. “Have the Chief Executive Officer paged immediately.”

Marcus swallowed hard, knowing that calling CEO David Sterling at this hour meant setting off a corporate four-alarm fire, but he had no alternative under Elise’s quiet, unshakeable command.

Five minutes later, the operations manager’s phone rang with an incoming executive encrypted video call. Marcus tapped accept, revealing the bewildered face of Skyline Airlines CEO David Sterling sitting in his study.

“Marcus, why on earth am I being patched through to an aircraft at the departure gate?” David demanded, adjusting his reading glasses before noticing Elise standing composed in the phone camera frame.

“David,” Elise said, stepping smoothly into the camera view. “I apologize for disturbing your evening at home, but your executive team has created an extraordinary situation aboard Flight 247 this evening.”

David Sterling’s jaw dropped as he recognized his most critical business partner. “Elise? Why are you standing in the aisle of a scheduled commercial flight in the middle of a gate delay?”

“Because your Vice President of Operations used his credentials to kick me out of my seat for his social acquaintance,” Elise explained calmly, pointing toward Cynthia, who cowered in seat 2C.
