Chapter 2: The Check-In Desk Rebellion
“Welcome to Azure Heights Resort. It is an absolute pleasure to have you with us. How may I be of service this afternoon?” Jessica’s smile was a masterpiece of hospitality training—warm, attentive, and utterly professional.
“You will find a reservation under the name Patricia Williams,” my mother announced, her tone implying she was royalty addressing a peasant. With a practiced flick of her wrist, she slid a heavy, matte-black American Express card across the cool marble surface of the counter. “I require the Premier Suite. And my daughter, Vanessa Williams, will be taking the other.”
“Yes, also a Premier Suite,” Vanessa chimed in, leaning against the counter. “We are hosting a family reunion this weekend.”
Jessica’s manicured fingers danced across her sleek keyboard. Her eyes scanned the glowing monitor. “Excellent. Yes, I see both of those reservations populated right here in our system. And that means you must be the third guest in the party, Miss Maya Williams.”
“That is correct,” I nodded.
“She will be occupying whatever standard, entry-level room you have hidden away,” Vanessa interjected loudly, ensuring a passing couple in matching tennis whites could hear. “And I cannot stress this enough: separate reservation entirely, separate billing profile.”
Jessica’s professional smile flickered, a momentary tightening at the corners of her mouth as her eyes darted between the screen and my sister. “Ah. Well. Actually, ma’am, Miss Maya Williams is currently designated in our system as the primary account holder for all three of the suites in question.”
Mom’s perfectly sculpted, micro-bladed eyebrows shot toward her hairline. “That is unequivocally a clerical error on your end.”
“I am happy to refresh the database, but…” Jessica trailed off, her brow furrowing.
“Please do,” Vanessa scoffed, crossing her arms. “My sister is a warehouse operative. She couldn’t possibly be the primary financier on a cup of coffee at an establishment of this caliber, let alone three luxury suites.”
I felt the heat that had been pooling in my stomach rise rapidly up my neck. It wasn’t the heat of humiliation or embarrassment. It was the exhausting, agonizing physical effort of keeping my mouth shut.
Not yet. Let them dig the hole just a little deeper.
Jessica clicked her mouse repeatedly, navigating through several heavily encrypted backend screens. Her expression morphed from polite confusion to profound bewilderment. “The reservation is permanently locked under Maya Williams. Furthermore, there are two supplementary Premier Suites authorized for a Patricia and Vanessa Williams. However… there is an operational note attached to this folio that is highly irregular.”
“What kind of note?” Mom demanded, her manicured fingers tapping impatiently against the marble.
“It explicitly states that Miss Maya Williams retains… special privileges across the entire resort property. However, the system is prompting me to seek managerial override for these specific privileges.”
Vanessa threw her head back and barked a laugh. “Special privileges? For an inventory grunt? Jessica, honey, I strongly suggest you reboot your entire server. Your software is experiencing a catastrophic meltdown.”
“Allow me to contact Mr. Harrison,” Jessica murmured, her hand already reaching for the sleek black receiver of the desk phone.
“The General Manager?” Mom’s arrogant posture stiffened, a hint of genuine annoyance bleeding into her voice. “Is that theater truly necessary? We merely wish to procure our room keys and freshen up.”
“For system irregularities of this specific classification, yes, ma’am. Protocol requires it. I promise it will only be a moment.”
As Jessica turned her back slightly, whispering urgently into the receiver, I stood perfectly still, watching my mother and sister exchange a long, heavily loaded look of mutual exasperation.
“This is precisely the chaotic nonsense I’m talking about, Maya,” Mom hissed, her voice dropping into that disappointed-parent register that used to make me feel two inches tall. “You undoubtedly attempted to utilize some fraudulent internet discount code or expired coupon that obviously isn’t honored at a five-star property. And now, you are humiliating us and stalling the entire check-in process.”
“I assure you, I didn’t use a coupon,” I replied softly.
“Then explain this ‘special privileges’ delusion,” Vanessa demanded, stepping into my personal space. “Did you falsify your employment details on the booking portal? Because that constitutes digital fraud, Maya. You could be arrested.”
“I haven’t lied about a single thing,” I said, my voice steady, my eyes locked on the elevators across the lobby.
Before Vanessa could launch another volley of accusations, a distinguished man in his early fifties approached the reception desk with purposeful strides. His bespoke navy suit was tailored to perfection, his silver hair impeccably styled, and his bearing radiated absolute authority.
Jessica straightened her spine so fast I thought I heard it snap. “Mr. Harrison. Thank you for assisting me so promptly.”
“Not a problem, Jessica.” Mr. Harrison stepped behind the counter, adjusting his glasses as he peered at the glowing monitor.
Then, he lifted his head. His eyes met mine.
In a fraction of a second, the polite, neutral mask of a seasoned General Manager dissolved entirely. It was replaced by an expression that bordered on sheer, unfiltered panic.
“Miss Williams,” Harrison breathed, his voice suddenly lacking its baritone command. “We… we were not expecting your arrival on the property until much later this evening.”
“My itinerary shifted,” I said simply, offering him a microscopic nod.
“I see.” Harrison swallowed hard. He turned to the pale receptionist. “Jessica. Pull up the Executive Access override codes, please. Immediately. Authorization Level Ten.”
Jessica’s eyes went as wide as saucers. Her fingers fumbled over the keys, she hit enter, and all the color drained from her face, leaving her looking like a porcelain doll.
“Oh,” Jessica squeaked, her hand flying to cover her mouth. “Oh, my absolute goodness. I am so profusely sorry, Ms. Williams. I had absolutely no idea who…”
“Level Ten?” Vanessa interrupted, her voice shrill with impatience, completely misreading the room. “What on earth does that signify?”
Mr. Harrison completely ignored my sister. His entire physical focus, his absolute deference, was aimed squarely at me. But the fuse was lit, and the bomb was about to detonate.
